Review of Cat in the Hat by TLC (SRT)

Thinking that my daughter, Aleyna, would better appreciate “Dr Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat” staged by The Little Company (TLC) of the Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) if she was familiar with its storyline, I had read the book to her and also viewed the cartoon on YouTube before watching the play.

She was looking forward to watch the cat in live action, but honestly, I did not think there would be any surprise element left for me. When the show began, I knew I was wrong. Immediately, I was captivated by the stage setup, props and the costumes. The production team had no doubt put in painstaking effort to achieve a striking similarity to what was illustrated in the book.

The cast was amazing; all of them were so dynamic and lively that we could not take our eyes off them. The “Cat” especially, was buoyant and a joy to watch. I liked how the actors injected bits of humour into the play and made everything seem so much fun. This play was definitely pitched at the right level for two to six years-old.

Throughout the forty-five minutes, the audience was fully enthralled by the performance. When the cast took their last bow, Aleyna was literally screaming into my ear, “Again! Again! I want to watch this all over again!”. As we left the theatre, we wished that TLC would come up with the next installment of the Dr Seuss series: “The Cat in the Hat Comes Back”.
